NBTY, Inc. announced that it has appointed four senior executives to its management team who will spearhead strategic growth initiatives for the company's branded businesses. Andre Branch has joined NBTY as Chief Marketing Officer, where he will lead consumer and customer marketing efforts, as well as focus on strategies to further build NBTY's trusted and high-quality brands, including Nature's Bounty, Sundown Naturals, Ester-C, Solgar and Osteo Bi-Flex. This will include developing the strategy, building brand and product roadmaps and developing a robust innovation pipeline that leverages consumer data, shopper insights and various media platforms. Andre brings more than 20 years of brand-building experience to the role from companies including Kraft Foods, Diageo and, most recently, L'Oreal. Derek Bowen has been named Senior Vice President, General Manager for Vitamins, Minerals, Herbals and Supplements (VMHS). Derek, who joins NBTY from Coty Beauty U.S., will be responsible for developing and executing strategic growth plans for all of NBTY's US Nutrition VMHS brands, including Nature's Bounty®, Sundown Naturals®, Osteo Bi-Flex® and Ester-C®, with full profit and loss accountability. As Senior VP of Marketing for Coty, Derek was responsible for managing volume and profit for the US Cosmetic and Fragrance portfolios. Derek has 20 years of experience in building and marketing well-known brands at strong consumer products companies such as Unilever, Sara Lee, Dial and P&G. Bradley Charron was named Senior Vice President, General Manager for Sports & Active Nutrition. Brad will be responsible for developing and executing strategic growth plans for all the company's Sports & Active Nutrition brands, such as MET-Rx®, Pure Protein®, Body Fortress® and Balance Bar®, with full profit and loss accountability. The Council, which is comprised of some of the medical and nutrition experts in the field, will provide guidance to the company as it looks to become the most recognized global leader in wellness products. The Council represents expertise in a variety of disciplines, including Nutrition Epidemiology, Alternative Medicine and Herbs, Food Science, Sports Nutrition and more. Chaired by Dr. David L. Katz, founding director of Yale University's Prevention Research Center, the group will provide tactical insight into nutrition and health trends, assist NBTY in advancing its global scientific efforts, and provide guidance and feedback on new product development and innovation, among other things. NBTY, Inc. announced consolidated earnings results for the first quarter of 2015. For the quarter, consolidated EBITDA was down 4%, principally due to increased advertising investments. Sales were $826 million, flat with the prior year. Increases in European retail segment were offset by declines in the private label business. Consolidated EBITDA was $143 million, representing a 17% EBITDA margin and a 4% decline against first quarter of 2014. Operating income increased 5.4% to $46 million as a result of higher sales volume, partially offset by increased advertising and SG&A costs. Net sales increased 5% to $63 million driven by international growth.
