Panasonic Automotive & Industrial Systems Europe Expands HL Series Electric Double Layer Capacitors

Panasonic Automotive & Industrial Systems Europe announced the extension of its HL Series Electric Double Layer Capacitors (ELDCs), which offer low resistance combined with guaranteed long life over a wide temperature range, from -40 to +85°C. Panasonic HL Series Gold Capacitors are wound radial lead type devices, which achieve far better capacitance compared to aluminium electrolytic capacitors (up to 1,000 times greater) and superior backup performance. Additional benefits of rapid charge and discharge cycles, (over 500,000 times) and exceptional ageing characteristics make Panasonic HL Series ELDC capacitors ideal for applications such as backup power supplies for servers and storage devices, solar-powered products, smart grid solutions, and driver-assist for motors and actuators in a variety of markets. The extension of the HL Series adds nominal capacitance values of 2.5F, 4.5F and 7.5F to the existing 50F and 100F parts, all rated at 2.7VDC. These ELDCs are guaranteed to maintain their capacitance and internal resistance without drifting at low temperatures, as opposed to other products available from competitors where the capacitance and internal resistance values may change by ± 30% and up to 7 times respectively from initial measured values. New, smaller size HL Series devices are guaranteed for a life of 2,000 hours at +70°C but can achieve 1,000 hours at 85°C with voltage derating. For power backup applications where ageing characteristics cause a rise in internal resistance and rapid decline in capacitance, EDLC capacitors are especially beneficial. Due to the unique electrolyte used in the Panasonic parts, such ageing effects are mitigated, in effect leading to part count reduction.

Panasonic Automotive & Industrial Systems Europe GmbH has released the much improved and accurate second generation of its GridEYE infrared array sensors. The new high gain types (AMG8833 and AMG8834) and low gain types (AMG8853 and AMG8854) of GridEYE 2nd Generation now benefit from an improved NETD (Noise Equivalent Temperature Difference) of 0.16°C at 10Hz and of 0.05°C at 1 Hz. For all GridEYE 2nd Generation models the detection distance has improved from 5m up to 7m. It is important to note that the second generation of GridEYE sensors is fully compatible with the existing first generation designs. This means that the engineers can now get improved and accurate results when they use the sensor in their applications. Panasonic is committed to improve the customer experience and provide much more application benefits with the improved MEMS technology. Based on Panasonic's MEMS (Micro Electro Mechanical Systems) technology the GridEYE 2nd Generation infrared array sensors combine a more sensitive MEMS sensor chip, a digital ASIC (I2C interface) and a silicon lens in the same small package. The parts feature 64 thermopile elements in an 8x8 grid format that detect absolute surface temperature without any contact. Unlike conventional sensors, GridEYE uses a patented 60° silicon lens etched out of a silicon wafer, which is (with less than 0.3mm height) the smallest available lens in the market. The combination of these technologies allows for a sensor package size of only 11.6mm x 8mm x 4.3mm, which is around 70% smaller in size than competitor products. Compared to single element thermopile sensors and pyroelectric sensors, the GridEYE 2nd Generation can not only detect moving and motionless people and objects but does that in comparison to its predecessor models with higher precision and higher accuracy.

Panasonic Automotive & Industrial Systems Europe showcased its technology lineup for PCIM (Power Conversion Intelligent Motion) 2016, which took place May 10 - 12 in Nuremberg, Germany. At Stand 429 in Hall 6 the company highlighted innovations - including passive components, semiconductors and thermal management solutions - that provide increased efficiency and reliability for a wide range of applications. As GaN moves from an innovative technology to mainstream production, Panasonic exhibits real and exciting applications that harness the power of their gallium nitride power transistors. The newly released X-GaN(TM) gate driver optimized for high frequency switching unlocks the full performance of the X-GaN transistor while keeping design efforts to a minimum. A fine control is possible (0.5% - 99.5% @ 50kHz). It benefits from built-in precise current source optimized for GiT transistors and built-in negative voltage source. The company also shows some GaN application examples: GaN-based compact power supply units and a GaN-based inverter for motors. Also a GaN evaluation environment, GaN power devices, power modules (GaN and SiC based), as well as a bidirectional AC/DC converter for power storage systems (SiC application example) features on the stand. In addition, Panasonic presented its prototype of assist robots that applies X-GaN technologies at PCIM for the first time in Europe, to showcase one of its applications. LDPGS (Low Density Pyrolytic Graphite Sheet) has been developed for Thermal Interface Material (TIM) and convinces to lowest thermal resistance, easy handling and due to the fact that it enables higher system reliability. Through its flexibility and ability to be cut in any shape, it allows new solutions for thermal management challenges where space and weight restrictions are critical and conventional solutions like grease are not feasible. LDPGS graphite sheet consists of a 2D carbon matrix with a thickness of only 200 µm, which effectively disperses and transfers heat along Z direction, protecting sensitive electronics like server units, IGBT modules or common inventors from damage. Further passive components from Panasonic on display at PCIM Europe 2016 include a wide variety of the company's latest capacitors and resistors. Featured resistors include current sensing resistors which are designed for low resistance to minimize power consumption. Panasonic offers a wide range of components in many different case sizes (0402 to 2512) and many resistance values. The metal plate technology (ERJM-series) and special construction makes the parts suitable for harsh environments while maintaining their high reliability. The double-sided resistor element technology (ERJxBW-series) and wide terminal technology (ERJA, ERJB-series) is ideal for high power applications. The company's current sensing resistors correspond to AEC-Q200 and therefore are well suited for all different kinds of automotive applications. Further technical details include a large power dissipation capability, soft termination to reduce the risk of solder joint cracking, high ESD resistance, and high pulse resistance. Featured capacitors include Panasonic's range of film capacitors and hybrid capacitors. The high reliability and high performance of the film capacitors facilitates the design of custom made modules that enable safe and robust designs for DC-link operation. The two lines of hybrid capacitors mark a perfect mixture of solid polymer and liquid electrolyte which allows high ripple current in very small sized capacitors. Stable characteristics over the whole frequency range and low ESR even at low temperatures support high power applications. In order to cover the market demand and application's requirements, Panasonic have developed a new Power choke coil technology (high power SMD in 12x12 case size ETQP8MxxxJFA). Based on metal powder, the panasonic High Power SMD is suitable for high ripple current application (e.g. Engine System, Start& Stop system, Steering system, etc.). Panasonic High Power SMD is not only suitable as replacement for rod core coil, but also suitable for downsizing. Instead of using 13x13, 15x15 or 17x17 case size, Panasonic can offer its High power SMD in 12x12 case size with same or even better electrical characteristics. Therefore this will lead also to reduce the size of the component and reduce the space on the PCB. With its low DCR characteristics, low power dissipation can be achieved with Panasonic High Power SMD.
