S&C Electric Signs Contracts with Lodestar Energy LLC

S&C Electric Company has signed contracts with Lodestar Energy LLC. The contracts have been signed to construct around two MW of additional solar PV plants in Massachusetts. Both firms' combined five solar projects are likely to bring around 12 MW of distributed energy resources to the commonwealth, enough solar energy to power roughly 2,000 homes. For the two newest projects S&C Electric Company will offer engineering, procurement, and construction services for the complete construction of a 1.2-MW solar-PV plant in Carver, Massachusetts, and a 650-kW solar-PV plant in Cheshire, Massachusetts.
S&C Electric Company, Schneider Electric and Oncor Complete Innovative Microgrid

S&C Electric Company and Schneider Electric have announced the unveiling of one of the most advanced microgrids in North America for Oncor. The microgrid is engineered to maximize newly installed energy storage, renewable generation and improve reliability. S&C teamed with Schneider Electric to combine new hardware and software technologies for the facility, which includes an integrated demonstration center for Oncor to showcase the microgrid's advanced capabilities and customer benefits. S&C and Schneider Electric built the microgrid at Oncor's System Operating Services Facility (SOSF) near Lancaster, Texas. The innovative system consists of four interconnected microgrids and utilizes nine different distributed generation sources, including two solar photovoltaic arrays, a microturbine, two energy storage units and four generators. To turn these diverse generation assets into a microgrid, S&C and Schneider Electric developed a distribution automation scheme that leverages multiple intelligent grid solutions from both companies enabling the four microgrids to effectively operate independently or as one larger microgrid. During a loss-of-power event, a combination of S&C's advanced distribution automation equipment and Schneider Electric's Microgrid Controller (MGC) use high-speed communications and distributed grid intelligence to automatically detect a problem on the grid. It starts with S&C's IntelliRupter PulseCloser fault interrupter which detects an interruption in power, tests to see if the issue is temporary or permanent, and if it is permanent dynamically islands the facility. The system then uses S&C's Scada-Matea CX Switches and Vista Underground Distribution Switchgear to automatically re-configure the distribution system while the MGC autonomously switches to alternative distributed power sources.
S&C Electric Company and XetaWave Launch New SpeedNet™ SDR Software Defined Radios

S&C Electric Company announced the new SpeedNet SDR Software Defined Radios, which combines S&C's field-proven mesh-radio technology with the software-defined radio platform from XetaWave. The SpeedNet SDR will support ultra-high frequency (UHF) bands, between 406 430-MHz and 450 “ 470-MHz, and will be used in S&C's self-healing distribution automation systems around the world. The new radios are being deployed on the Isle of Wight, off the coast of the United Kingdom, where they are being used with S&C's IntelliRupter® PulseClosers and IntelliTeam® to reduce the frequency and duration of power outages on the island. The new SpeedNet SDR offering will help expedite smart grid deployments globally, and ensure these solutions reach full potential backed by a reliable, effective communication network. The SpeedNet SDR has received its FCC and IC certifications and CE conformity mark allowing it to be used in smart grid applications wherever the UHF 400-MHz bands are available. Subsequent certifications for South Africa, South America and Central America are in the approval process. The SpeedNet SDR will be used where S&C's SpeedNet 900-MHz mesh radio operations band is not available or when licensed frequencies are preferred by utility customers. The radio offers reliable Ethernet and serial connectivity, layer3 wireless mesh bridging and highly available mesh connectivity. The SpeedNet SDR has modulation levels up to 32QAM that provide the industry's higher level of data throughput using licensed 12.5-KHz channels. XetaWave's software-defined radio platform is incredibly flexible and scalable, allowing for multiple data speeds, channel sizing and modulations such that customers can optimize throughput and range. XetaWave is manufacturing the radios in its 17,000 square-foot facility in Louisville, Colo., with S&C serving as a value added reseller.
