A bill has been approved seeking an investigation on holdings in coal from The California State Teachers Employees' Retirement System (CalSTRS) and California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS). The boards for both funds would only need to divest if they determined that it would not conflict with their fiduciary responsibility. Advocates for eco-friendly investing argue that coal is increasingly becoming a poor investment, in addition to driving climate change. But both pension funds say they generally oppose divestment efforts unless they are mandated by law, which Senate Bill 185 does not do.
