Mexico City Court Orders Nextel Mexico to Compensate 3 Million Customers for Improper Service Charges

Nextel Mexico has been ordered by a Mexico City court to compensate more than 3 million customers for improper service charges that the company has been collecting since 2012. The Mexican capital's second district court in civil matters determined that Nextel should repair the quantifiable damage caused to each consumer between 2012 and the conclusion of the trial. The class action was launched by Profeco in 2013 and was originally filed over alleged improper charges and services that were not delivered as advertised. To receive compensation, those affected must prove that they purchased one of the specialized mobile services offered by Nextel's suppliers.

AT&T To Merge Nextel and Iusacell

AT&T, Inc. (NYSE:T) plans to merger Comunicaciones Nextel de México, S.A. de C.V. and Grupo Iusacell, S.A. de C.V. in 2016. For now Iusacell and Nextell will continue to operate as separate brands within AT&T in the Mexican market but will offer AT&T plans instead of their own.

Nextel Mexico announced unaudited earnings results for the first quarter ended March 31, 2015. For the quarter, the company reported service and other revenues of $291.4 million against $373.3 million a year ago. Loss was $19.0 million against $12.5 million a year ago. Operating revenues were $301,415,000 against $381,844,000 a year ago.
