General Motors to Shut Down Gujarat Plant; Plans to Invest $1 Billion in Indian Operations

General Motors announced that it will shut its Gujarat plant to consolidate its business in India. The move may result in more than 2,000 people losing their jobs in Gujarat. The company has started talks with the union at Halol and plans to adequately compensate them. The new announcement also means that the company will scale down its annual production from 282,000 units a year to 220,000 per annum.
The company also announced that it will invest $1 billion in Indian operations as it seeks to completely revamp its India product line-up by 2020. It plans to introduce as many as 10 models by 2020. The company claimed that new investments will create 12,000 new jobs. The firm also plans to double its market share in the country by 2020 and plans to export 30% of its production from India.

General Motors Corporation has launched an updated version of its multi-purpose vehicle, Enjoy, in India. The model is to be priced between INR 624,000 and INR 879,000. The vehicle has a variety of features including steering-mounted audio controls and a glossy black finish on the door armrests.
GM India Announces Management Changes

GM India named Kaher Kazem as the chief operating officer effective from 1 August, a newly created position. Kazem is currently overseeing GM's operations in Uzbekistan. The automaker also appointed Jack Uppal as vice-president of marketing and customer experience from 1 August, while Hardeep Singh Brar has assumed the responsibility of vice-president of sales effective from 1 July. All the three executives will report to Arvind Saxena, president and managing director of GM India.
