General Motors In Talks To Sell Halol Plant
Apr 20 16
General Motors India Private Limited might last a little longer as the company's Halol site is unlikely to be shut down in June 2016. General Motors has requested the Gujarat government to put the closure application on hold as it is in talks with prospective buyers for its facility. As per sources in the state labour department, the company had submitted a closure application in September last year for its Halol site. Thereafter, it requested the government to put the decision on the closure application on hold until further intimation from the company as it was considering options for the future of the Halol facility. “The state government then said that we cannot put an application on hold for an indefinite period. It is best that the company files a fresh application as and when it is ready," said the official. Thus as of now, no fresh deadline has been set for the closure. The official further added that General Motors is in talks with a Chinese firm to sell the assets, hence, it has asked to put the closure application on hold. It is believed that the size of the deal could be around INR 14 billion - INR 15 billion. A GM India spokesperson said, "We do not respond to rumor and speculation. As we have said before, we are examining a number of options in relation to the Halol factory, where we intend to cease manufacturing, including the sale of the site. We have nothing further to announce at this time." General Motors.
