Telesat Orders New Telstar 18 VANTAGE High Throughput Satellite and Launch Services; Enters into an Agreement with APT Satellite Company Limited
Dec 23 15
Telesat has procured a powerful new spacecraft called Telstar 18 VANTAGE from Space Systems Loral (SSL). The new satellite will operate from 138 degrees East and is expected to be in service in the first half of 2018. Telstar 18 VANTAGE will expand Telesat's coverage of growing satellite service markets in China, Mongolia, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific Ocean region. Telstar 18 VANTAGE will be the third satellite with high throughput capabilities in Telesat's global fleet and, like the others, will utilize a combination of broad regional beams and high throughput spot beams in Ku-band to maximize throughput and spectral efficiency. It will also provide extensive C-band coverage of Asia that reaches from India and Pakistan in the West all the way to Hawaii in the East, enabling direct connectivity from any point in Asia to the Americas.
Telesat is also announced it has entered into an agreement with APT Satellite Company Limited (APSTAR) under which APSTAR will make use of capacity on Telstar 18 VANTAGE to serve its growing base of customers. This agreement extends the long term relationship between APSTAR and Telesat that has existed for more than a decade.
Telesat Launches Telstar 12 VANTAGE Satellite
Nov 24 15
Telesat announced the successful launch of its new Telstar 12 VANTAGE satellite aboard a rocket provided by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI). Telstar 12 VANTAGE was built by Airbus Defence and Space and is the first of a new generation of Telesat satellites with capacity optimized to serve the types of bandwidth intensive applications increasingly in demand by users. Operating from Telesat’s prime orbital location of 15 degrees West, Telstar 12 VANTAGE will utilize a combination of broad regional beams and high throughput spot beams to increase capacity and offer superior performance for broadcasters as well as enterprise networks on the ground, in the air and at sea. The satellite will use Ku-band for all customer services assuring backward compatibility with existing Ku-band terminal equipment. Telstar 12 VANTAGE replaces and expands on Telesat’s Telstar 12 satellite. Telstar 12 has long been valued by the satellite user community for its ability to seamlessly connect the Americas to Europe and the Middle East from 15 West, one of the few orbital locations that enables such coverage. With Telstar 12 VANTAGE, customers in mobility, government, and energy markets will now have even greater service options between EMEA and the Americas along with powerful new beams over Brazil, Sub-Saharan Africa, the South Atlantic, Caribbean, Mediterranean and North Sea. Telstar 12 VANTAGE was built by Airbus Defence and Space using their highly-reliable Eurostar E3000 platform. The satellite has a mass of approximately 4,800 kg and a 15 year design life.
