A South Korean Court Orders Nachi-Fujikoshi Corporation to Pay World War II Laborers

A South Korean court on October 28, 2014 ordered a Nachi-Fujikoshi to compensate dozens of South Koreans in a World War II forced labor case. The Nachi-Fujikoshi Corporation must pay from $75,800 to $94,800 to each of the 13 forced laborers who are still alive and to the families of 18 who have died, the Seoul Central District Court ruled on October 28, 2014. The company was accused of using 1,000 Korean girls aged 12 to 18 as forced laborers at its factory in Japan. Allegations of forced labor during the 35 years of Japanese colonial rule of South Korea are one of a number of issues that have intensified tensions between the two countries.
