African Bank Gets Regulatory Approval to Set Up Good Bank

African Bank has received approval from the SA Reserve Bank (Sarb) and the Financial Services Board (FSB) to set up a new "Good Bank" with its remaining uncontaminated assets. The Good Bank has already struck agreements with majority of its debt holders, and is now subject to a credit provider licence from the National Credit Regulator. Commencement of operations is dependent on the final registration of Good Bank as a bank under Section 16(1) of the Banks Act.

South Africa's President tapped deputy governor Lesetja Kganyago to lead the country's central bank, hoping to reassure jittery markets after respected governor Gill Marcus resigned. The decision to appoint Mr. Lesetja Kganyago as governor of the South African Reserve Bank with effect of the 9th of November 2014. Kganyago has served as deputy governor of the South African Reserve Bank since May 2011. Previously, he served as director general of the National Treasury. In September, Marcus announced she will not be renewing her five-year term after guiding Africa's most developed economy out of a recession in the wake of the global economic meltdown.
