Nippon Life Insurance Co. to Launch Japan's 1st Fertility Treatment Insurance

Nippon Life Insurance Co. announced that on October 2, 2016 it plans to launch Japan's first insurance product to cover some fertility treatment costs. The company hopes the new product will support childbirth, amid Japan's declining birthrate. When those insured receive in-vitro or micro fertilization, they will receive benefit payments for up to 12 treatments as well as cash contributions for giving birth. Women aged 16 to 40 will be able to buy the product for coverage lasting 10-20 years, with monthly premiums costing around JPY 10,000. Insurance holders will receive benefit payments of JPY 50,000 per treatment for the first to sixth therapy and JPY 100,000 for the seventh to 12th treatment. Those covered will receive cash contributions of JPY 100,000 for the first-born child, JPY 300,000 for the second born, JPY 500,000 for the third born, JPY 700,000 for the fourth born, and JPY 1 million for the fifth born and beyond. Maturity insurance will be up to JPY 2 million. People who receive treatments within the second year and give birth within the first year after buying the insurance will not be covered. General fertility treatments including controlled ovarian hyperstimulation are eligible for public insurance, but in-vitro and micro fertilization treatments are not covered. The cost of treatment remains high, with in-vitro fertilization costing some JPY 300,000 per treatment and micro fertilization around JPY 400,000.
