Vodafone Netherlands Introduces 'Like New' Smartphones

Vodafone Netherlands has launched 'Like New', an offer of nearly new mobile phones for sale. The pilot service allows customers taking a new subscription to acquire the phones. The handsets are models returned by customers within the 14-day window for canceling sales. Vodafone checks and resets the phones before sale, promising the new customer they will not be able to tell the difference from a new device. The 'Like New' phones offered at a discount of EUR 5 per month compared to normal prices, for phones including the Samsung Galaxy S5, iPhone 4s and iPhone 5s.

Vodafone Netherlands reported revenue and operating results for the first quarter to June 2014. The company reported service revenues of EUR 430.9 million for its fiscal first quarter to June, down 4.0% from a year earlier. The decline in revenues slowed compared to the previous quarter, helped by a recovering consumer market and higher ARPU due to its Red plans.
The company still lost 24,000 mobile customers in the three months, as 40,000 new postpaid customers were offset by the loss of 64,000 prepaid users. Prepaid now accounts for just 27.2% of the base, versus 31.6 a year ago. The company counted in total 5.243 million mobile customers at the end of June, down 1.5% from a year earlier. ARPU totaled EUR 25.2, up from EUR 24.3 in the previous quarter. Postpaid ARPU reached EUR 33.3 and prepaid was at EUR 4.3. With 4G coverage at 92%, the share of customers with smart phones was stable at 60.4%. Data traffic was up 86% year-on-year to 4,479 TB in the quarter. However, the company reports data traffic including MVNOs, while customer numbers exclude these. The company also reported voice traffic lower year-on-year at 2.66 billion minutes, and SMS volume down 25% to 479 million messages. On the fixed market, the company added 1,000 customers in the quarter for a total 43,000.
