General Motors South Africa Launches its Opel Mokka Compact Sport Utility Vehicle

General Motors South Africa has launched its Opel Mokka compact sport utility vehicle in the country. Powered by a 1.4-litre turbocharged gasoline (petrol) engine (103 kW/200 Nm), the vehicle is available in two trim levels (Enjoy and Cosmos) with a choice of 6-speed manual transmission (MT) or automatic transmission (AT). The vehicle is priced between ZAR 288,500 (USD 23,658) for the Mokka Enjoy MT and ZAR 335,500 for the Mokka Cosmos AT. The vehicle's launch is part of a global product offensive by Opel that will see the automaker launch 27 new vehicles and 18 engines in applicable markets by 2018. In South Africa, the Opel brand currently sells just five nameplates, with the Corsa B-segment car accounting for more than 50% of its total sales. The company also plans to launch its Opel Corsa OPC in South Africa in the third quarter of this year 2015.

General Motors South Africa, a subsidiary of General Motors Corporation has launched its Opel Adam and Opel Mokka in South Africa. Both new models will be launched in South Africa in 2015 as part of a global product offensive by Opel, which will see the German brand introduce 27 new vehicles and 17 engines in applicable markets by 2018. The Opel Adam is a sub-compact hatchback, while the Mokka is a sub-compact SUV.
GM Halts South African Plants as Strike Turns Violent

General Motors halted production at their South African plants as a strike by more than 220,000 metalworkers disrupted car-component maker and turned violent. Police arrested 26 people on July 4, 2014 after several incidents of attacks, intimidation and vandalism at factories around Johannesburg. Wage talks failed after the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) rejected an improved offer from the Steel and Engineering Industries Federation of Southern Africa. It follows a five-month strike by more than 70,000 platinum miners that caused the economy to contract in the first quarter of the year.
