Coolpad Selects Hillcrest Labs for Low Power Sensor Hub in New Smartphones
Jun 23 14
Hillcrest Labs announced that Coolpad Group is using Hillcrest's sensor hub software to enable always on sensing on Coolpad smartphones. Specifically, Hillcrest's Freespace(R) software will run on Atmel's low-power microcontroller solutions to provide high performance sensor fusion, gesture recognition, and always on context awareness capabilities, with dramatically lower power consumption and extended battery life. Sensor hubs are a separate class of chips designed to offload sensor management from the main processor for mobile phones and other devices. They reduce the power requirements to add always on sensing in smart phones, tablets, and wearable's devices such as activity monitors, smart watches, and head mounted displays (HMDs). This enables gesture control, context awareness, pedestrian navigation, augmented reality, health and fitness monitoring, and immersive gaming. Hillcrest's sensor hub software products combine an array of sophisticated algorithms to provide low power, high performance sensor fusion and transform sensor data into valuable application-ready information.
Lenovo Selects Hillcrest Labs to Bring Motion, Gesture and Cursor Control to Smart TVs; to Open New Regional Office Based in Taiwan
Apr 22 14
Hillcrest Labs announced that Lenovo's new line of Smart TVs is using Hillcrest's patented Freespace(R) in-air pointing and motion control software. Freespace enables point-and-click, gesture and motion control of Smart TVs through simple in-air movements of a remote control. Lenovo's Freespace-enabled Smart TVs include the new S9 Smart TV that was unveiled on April 16 for sale across China. Freespace will form the foundation of Lenovo's Smart TV user experience and enable improved content navigation, better gaming options, and simple Web browsing. It provides simple to use point-and-click controls and 3D motion tracking optimized for consumers in the living room environment. This is particularly important for Android(TM) TVs, as the technology replicates the touch and tilt based controls commonly used by Android apps on other devices. Lenovo's choice of Freespace is further evidence of the technology's importance across advanced Smart TV platforms. It also marks another major, Asia-based consumer electronics OEM to adopt Hillcrest's technology.
To support this growing market, Hillcrest also announced that it will open a new regional office based in Taiwan, which will address the local demand for Freespace in Smart TVs, smartphones, tablets, wearable electronics, and more. The office will consist of both sales and technical support staff to support Hillcrest's growing customer base in the region.
Hillcrest Labs and Bosch Sensortec Collaborate on Sensor Hub Solution for Head-Mounted Displays and Wearable Devices
Mar 6 14
Hillcrest Labs and Bosch Sensortec announced a partnership to launch a new sensor solution for head-mounted displays (HMDs). The BNO070 solution includes Hillcrest's SH-1 sensor hub software running on Bosch Sensortec's 9-axis system in package (SiP), which features an accelerometer, gyroscope, magnetometer, and a 32-bit microcontroller in a single package. The solution is optimized for the HMD market, and can be customized for other wearable computing applications. Hillcrest and Bosch Sensortec will begin sampling the new BNO070 to key development partners in mid-2014. The BNO070 will enable motion control, pedometer, compass, gesture recognition, and context awareness for augmented reality, virtual reality, gaming, and navigation applications on HMDs. The low power consumption and compact size -- 5.2 x 3.8 x 1.1 mm(3) -- make the BNO070 ideal for wearable devices, where both power and space are limited. The pre-integrated solution eases system integration, provides faster time to market, and reduces customer development costs for adding advanced sensor-based functionality to a wide array of devices.
