BAE Systems, DRS Technologies and Alereon, Inc. to Develop New Night-Vision Weapon Sights and Head-Mounted Goggles for U.S. Army
Jul 28 14
The U.S. Army has selected BAE Systems and DRS Technologies to develop new night-vision weapon sights and head-mounted goggles. Alereon supplies both vendors with Ultra-WideBand (UWB) radio technology that connects the weapon sight and goggles via a high-speed, difficult-to-detect link that carries real-time video and sensor data. The contracts, worth $800 million dollars, were awarded by the Army Contracting Command after a five-company "bake-off" for development of Family of Weapon Sights-Individual (FWS-I) and Enhanced Night Vision Goggle III (ENVG III) solutions for the military. The combination of FWS-I and ENVG III allows soldiers to operate more efficiently at night or from behind cover, improving soldier lethality, effectiveness and survivability. The wireless component provided by Alereon eliminates the wire between the weapon sight and goggle, reducing weight and avoiding snag hazards. Alereon will work with DRS and BAE to satisfy orders over the next five years.
