Alitalia - Compagnia Aerea Italiana S.p.A. Key Developments

Alitalia - Compagnia Aerea Italiana S.p.A. Reportedly Considering Multiple Alternatives

Alitalia - Compagnia Aerea Italiana S.p.A. could cut up to 2,000 jobs as controlling shareholder; Etihad Airways P.J.S.C. pushes for sweeping changes to turn the loss-making airline around, according to sources close to the matter. Etihad, which owns 49% of the carrier, declined to comment. Alitalia management is now studying several options to boost revenues and create an operator that can finally yield a profit. No final decision has yet been taken, sources say. Alitalia is also considering grounding at least 20 planes, mostly Airbus 320 aircraft, said two of the sources. However, whether Etihad is prepared to invest more is uncertain. "In the low oil price environment, it will be a big challenge for Etihad to convince Abu Dhabi for more cash," said one of the sources. Ultimately the options for Alitalia remain few and far between, unless another cash-rich investor can be found or it can be folded under a bigger and financially stronger European player, industry sources and analysts have said.

Lufthansa Seeks To Acquire Stake In Alitalia

Luca Cordero di Montezemolo, Chairman of Alitalia - Compagnia Aerea Italiana S.p.A., says possibility of Deutsche Lufthansa Aktiengesellschaft (DB:LHA) buying stake in Alitalia "does not exist".

Alitalia and Virgin Australia Enhance Code Share Agreement

Compagnia Aerea Italiana S.p.A. and Virgin Australia have enhanced their codeshare agreement to offer Italian air travelers eight new Australian destinations. Alitalia from will place its AZ code on a range of Virgin Australia selected flights from Sydney to eight new destinations: Adelaide, Ballina, Coffs Harbour, Gold Coast, Hobart, Sunshine Coast, Melbourne and Perth. A codeshare agreement between the two airlines is already in place on flights from Abu Dhabi to Sydney and beyond to Brisbane. Similarly, Virgin Australia will place its "VA" flight code on Alitalia operated flights from Rome to 11 Italian cities - Bari, Bologna, Catania, Florence, Genoa, Lamezia Terme, Naples, Palermo, Reggio Calabria, Turin and Venice - in addition to the current codeshared services between Rome and Milan to Abu Dhabi where passengers transfer from one airline to the other. Members of Alitalia's MilleMiglia loyalty programme can earn and redeem miles on the entire Virgin Australia network and eligible members can enjoy lounge access at airports, priority check-in and increased baggage allowances. The expanded cooperation with Virgin Australia will provide Italian air travellers with a wider range of Australian destinations for business travel and holidaymakers to bring Italy and Australia even closer. And this new arrangement opens up a variety of Italian cities throughout the whole country for Australian flyers. The codeshare agreement means travellers can benefit from a single ticket for the entire journey with luggage checked-in at the departure airport and delivered to the final destination. The new codeshare flights are now available for sale through the airlines' reservation systems, as well as in travel agencies.
