Slovak Government Eyes Stake in Kosice

The Slovak government may intend to acquire Slovakian factory of United States Steel Corp. (NYSE:X). Economy Minister Peter Ziga said if Unites States Steel decides to sell U. S. Steel Kosice, s.r.o., the Slovak government may buy it to prevent its closure. "I am worried about a possible change of the owner, if it were a non-standard owner," he said. "I can imagine that the government would join (any) talks and seek a share to prevent a new owner buying the plant only to close it. A 34% share would ensure a blocking mechanism so that the state can have a say," he added. A spokesman for Kosice declined to comment when asked about the possibility of a sale.
