DISH Network Reaches Deal for WHIO Service
Apr 1 16
DISH Network reached agreement on a new contract with the parent company of WHIO-TV Channel 7 and granted a short contract extension to the parent company of WDTN-TV Channel 2 - avoiding a blackout locally for both that DISH had threatened when its contracts with the stations expired. At issue were the fees TV stations charge cable and satellite operators to carry their programming. The deals are renegotiated on a regular basis but usually without any disruption in service. Without the contracts, DISH is not permitted to broadcast the local stations. The negotiations affected stations all over the country and were over DISH service for the stations operated by Cox Media Group, the parent company of WHIO-TV, as well as Media General, the parent company of WDTN-TV.
Cox Media Group Cuts 27 Jobs
Mar 10 16
Cox Media Group announced that it is eliminating 27 jobs, most of them in Dayton, as it contracts with another media company for copy editing and design. The company's shared services division announced it would contract with a number of vendors, including Gatehouse Media which recently purchased the Columbus Dispatch, for some copy editing and design functions. Gatehouse, the company said, currently does design and copy editing for Cox's weekly newspapers in Texas and southwest Ohio. This will mean the 27 shared services editing positions will be cut over the next four months. Of them 21 are at the Dayton-based copy desk and another six are based in West Palm Beach, Fla. The company says the changes don't impact staffing for its Cox Media Group Ohio division, the specific division which owns Dayton Daily News and WHIO-TV.
