PA Consulting Group Patents Dynamic QR Authentication System to Prevent Fraud
Oct 14 13
PA Consulting Group (PA) has patented a new technology that allows consumers to instantly confirm the authenticity of luxury goods, tickets and other items via their smartphone. The new dynamic QR system will be demonstrated at CTIA MobileCON at the San Jose Convention Center, Calif, October 16, 2013. In this new approach, a continuously changing QR code is attached to a product, device or ticket; the code can then be read and verified by the consumer upon purchase using a smartphone application. Each incarnation of the code is only valid for a specific time frame -- seconds, minutes or hours, depending on the use -- making it virtually impossible for fraudsters to copy. Previously, QR codes were unsuitable for secure authentication purposes, because the codes are easy to copy and duplicate. PA Consulting Group's system can bring immediate benefits in many areas where security, authenticity, traceability or validity is of significance to the supplier and to the end user, particularly in areas such as consumer products, ticketing, transport, supply chain and pharmaceuticals. Potential uses for the QR authentication system include: Product authenticity; Ticketing for transport and events; Advertising and promotions; Real-time lotteries and prize events and On-packet promotional campaigns. This innovation combines the concepts of machine readable codes and a time changing authentication system to produce an authentication scheme which can be applied to any machine readable code such as 2D barcodes, 3D barcodes and QR codes.
A Trio Of US-Led Consortiums Eye DE&S
Jul 17 13
A trio of US-led consortiums has formed to bid for Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S). Bechtel Corporation and CH2M HILL Companies, Ltd. are fronting two of the groupings that want to run DE&S. Bechtel Corporation has teamed-up with PricewaterhouseCoopers International Limited, PA Consulting Group Limited and QinetiQ Group Plc (LSE:QQ.). CH2M HILL Companies, Ltd has teamed up with Serco Group plc (LSE:SRP) and WS Atkins plc (LSE:ATK). A third consortium is understood to comprise URS Corporation (NYSE:URS) and KBR, Inc. (NYSE:KBR), who were expected to bid separately. The bid teams were expected to be announced on July 16, when the Defence Secretary, Philip Hammond, launched the second reading of the Defence Reform Bill. However, the Coalition’s in-fighting over the Liberal Democrat-prompted review of alternatives to the Trident nuclear deterrent appears to have side-lined that news. Philip Hammond told the House of Commons that DE&S itself would be registered as a British company, regardless of the international firms within a winning consortium. He added that the final decision on whether to go ahead with this model would be taken next spring, with an operator to be selected by early 2015.
