BAE Systems, Inc. Key Developments

BAE Systems and Integrated Device Technology, Inc. Develop New Space-Grade Chip to Speed and Increase Data Movement in Space

BAE Systems and Integrated Device Technology, Inc.® announced a new technology for space applications that will transfer greater volumes of data at higher speeds than ever before possible during space missions. BAE Systems’ new space-grade microchip, known as the RADNET1848-PS space-grade RapidIO switch, will use the market’s first RapidIO interconnect to speed massive amounts of data through a network of radiation-hardened computer systems in outer space. BAE Systems selected IDT’s 240 Gbps CPS-1848 RapidIO switch as the foundation for its RADNET1848-PS product. IDT’s RapidIO chip, used to connect computer system components, delivers high reliability at ultra-high speeds. It delivers superior performance per watt, low latency and deterministic packet delivery to enable reliable, fault-tolerant systems. These space-grade solutions are resilient to -- and can work within -- the ionizing/radiation-intensive environments of space.

BAE Systems Inc. Plans to Layoff 650 Workers at its Norfolk Shipyard Operations

BAE Systems Inc. announced that it plans to layoff 650 of the 1,500 workers at its Norfolk shipyard operations, speaking to broader budget challenges currently facing the U.S. Navy. The number of surface combatant ships docked at Norfolk is expected to fall to 51 come 2016 - down from 70 in 2012 - as ships are either reassigned to ports in Rota, Spain, and Jacksonville, Florida, or decommissioned. These ship numbers are dwindling at the same time the Navy is facing spending constraints for the modernization of its vessels, pressuring BAE to cut its workforce. Among the ships docked in Norfolk is the Arleigh Burke class of destroyers, the Ticonderoga class cruisers, the Wasp class of Landing Helicopter Deck (LHD) amphibious assault ships, and the San Antonio class of amphibious transport dock warships.

BAE Systems Inc. Systems Receives Contract Extension from Republic of Singapore Air Force

BAE Systems Inc. has received an extension to its contract to support the Republic of Singapore Air Force, or RSAF, Air Grading Centre, or AGC, -Flying Training Institute, or FTI, from its Flight Training Academy located in Tamworth, New South Wales. BAE Systems will continue to provide the RSAF with aircraft, purpose built training facilities, instructor training, student accommodation and recreational facilities until the end of 2019. Under the contract extension, the RSAF aims to increase the number of students that undertake air grading from 220 to 240 annually. The AGC will continue to be supported by a permanent detachment of 12 RSAF personnel who, along with their families, make a valued contribution to the local Tamworth community.
