The Marine Biological Laboratory Announces Executive Changes

Huntington Willard has been appointed the next president and director of the Marine Biological Laboratory. President Robert J. Zimmer, who is also chairman of the MBLs Board of Trustees, announced the appointment to the MBL and University communities. At the MBL, Willard will lead one of the worlds foremost centers for biological research, international collaboration and education. Willard, currently the Arts and Sciences Professor of Biology and Genome Sciences at Duke University, will begin his appointment at the MBL on January 1, 2015. From 2003 to 2014 he was the founding director of the Duke Institute for Genome Sciences and Policy, a highly interdisciplinary unit that spanned the life sciences, engineering, medicine, social sciences and the humanities. Willard will succeed Arthur M. Sussman, the MBLs interim president and director, who assumed that role in November with the departure of former President and Director Joan Ruderman.

University of Chicago President Robert J. Zimmer will serve as the next chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Marine Biological Laboratory. This proposed step was met with unanimous support at the MBL boards meeting
on Nov. 2. His term will begin after the boards April 2014 meeting. He succeeds Jack Rowe, who has served as
board chairman since May 2006.
