National Oceanic and Atmospheric Agency Signs First U.S. Government Deal with SES for O3b High Throughput Solution
Aug 17 15
SES Government Solutions has agreed to a one year contract with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Agency (NOAA) to provide O3b Networks’ services and ground equipment to the National Weather Service Office (WSO) in Pago Pago, American Samoa. NOAA’s WSO supports the National Weather Service (NWS) mission to provide weather, water, and climate data, forecasts and warnings for the protection of life and property. The WSO also provides critically important tropical cyclone warning information to portions of the Pacific. The contract allows NOAA to expand their broadband connectivity outside the continental U.S. to facilitate the wider dissemination of weather and data forecasting. The O3b ground equipment and services at WSO Pago Pago will be key elements of NOAA’s communications link to meet these mission requirements. This particular implementation will enhance NOAA’s existing terrestrial connectivity with the use of O3b’s high throughput and low latency bandwidth. An uninterrupted high-speed data connection between the NOAA station at Pago Pago and the primary Pacific NWS center on Ford Island in Honolulu, HI is essential for NOAA to update forecast models and issue safety warnings in near real-time. Many Big Data files are transferred between the two stations, including weather maps and seismic sensor data. By connecting over the O3b constellation, NOAA can accelerate their analysis while reducing reaction times to weather or seismic events.
SES Government Solutions Unveils Netcentric Communications Solution for Field-Deployed Units
Jul 9 15
SES Government Solutions has unveiled a comprehensive Netcentric communications solution for field-deployed units. By combining O3b's satellite broadband connectivity and RIVA Network's field deployable 4G nanoLTE solution, the SES solution delivers real-time High Definition (HD) video feeds and imagery files stored in the Cloud to individual members of remote field teams. The same link also allows those deployed teams to collect and send raw sensor and video data back to off-site data analysis and command centers. This mission-critical technology is compatible with any smartphone and paves the way for an increased use of mobile devices for military operations. In essence each soldier, sailor, airman and marine can be a sensor providing vital information to deployed units through the O3b system. The RIVA Network addition to this demonstration provided another key capability to support US Government forces. The sphere of connectivity is scalable with multiple nanoLTE nodes and ranges up to 22 miles, depending on the exact network configuration. All RIVA components for this particular demonstration are easily transportable.
SES Government Solutions Wins 14-Year Contract by Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems to Host Payload on Board SES-15
Apr 22 15
SES Government Solutions announced that it has been awarded a 14-year contract by Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems to host a payload on board SES-15. With the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) as the US Government customer, the Wide Area Augmentation Systems (WAAS) hosted payload will serve as an air navigation aid to augment the Global Positioning Systems (GPS), with the goal of improving its accuracy, integrity and availability. The contract includes construction of the WAAS payload, launch on the SES-15 satellite and 11 years of on-orbit operations with options to extend on an annual basis. The satellite has a life expectancy of 15 years. Launching in 2017, SES-15 will be located at 129 degrees West.
