National Urban League Inc. Key Developments

Judge Dismisses Discrimination Suit against Comcast, Time Warner Cable and Others

A district court judge granted motions to dismiss a $20 billion racial discrimination suit filed against Comcast Corp., Time Warner Cable Inc. and others. The National Association of African-American Owned Media and Entertainment Studios Network filed the suit in February, alleging that Comcast refused to contract with 100% African-American-owned media companies, and that Comcast and Time Warner Cable did not distribute any channels that were owned and operated by 100% African-American-owned media, except for the Africa Channel. However, in his Aug. 5 ruling, Senior U.S. Judge Terry Hatter Jr. of the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, Western Division, wrote that "accepting all of the factual allegations in the complaint as true, the plaintiffs have failed to allege any plausible claim for relief." Other defendants in the suit included the National Urban League, National Action Network, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, Al Sharpton and Meredith Attwell Baker.
