Vodafone Spain has opened a new R&D centre in Seville to work on 'big data' and 'smart city' technologies. This follows a framework agreement signed last September between Vodafone and the regional government, under which the operator will invest over EUR 243 million in two years to deploy infrastructure, promote the technology sector, develop cultural and educational projects and implement initiatives in strategic growth sectors in the region. Furthermore, the new 'Vodafone Smart Center' will host the Minerva Programme started by the Andalusian government and Vodafone for promoting technological entrepreneurship projects. The first research project at the centre will focus on developing efficient public services for the 'connected city'. For this Vodafone partners with IBM and its development platform.
