University of Southern Maine Announces 14 Layoffs

Interim University of Southern Maine President David Flanagan announced 14 staff layoffs as the latest part of a plan to close a $16 million budget gap for the coming fiscal year. The staff positions eight of which are within the school's administration represent another significant wave of job cuts in a process that has already included the elimination of 51 faculty positions and five programs. None of the layoffs announced were teaching positions. More jobs may be reduced in the coming months as the university looks to reorganize its research administration.

The University of Southern Maine Cuts 50 Faculty Positions

The University of Southern Maine announced that the company has a plan to cut 50 faculty positions and two programs in an effort to eliminate $6 million from its budget. These cuts are the first phase in a year-long effort to eliminate $16 million from the university's budget that recently appointed president David Flanagan has said is his first task in his new role. The entire University of Maine System is facing a budget shortfall that will result in cuts and restructuring efforts. The two programs that have been proposed for elimination at USM are an undergraduate degree in French and a graduate degree in applied medical sciences. Those are in addition to the three USM programs that the system's board of trustees approved for elimination in September.
