The University of Queensland has announced the appointment of Mark Erickson as new Academic Registrar and Director of Academic Services. Mr. Erickson has been Registrar, Student Administration, at the Australian National University since 2012. He is a member of the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency Register of Experts, and president and chair of the Australian and New Zealand Higher Education User Group (HEUG). He also sits on the global HEUG board.

The University of Queensland appointed Australian Research Council Chief Executive Officer Professor Aidan Byrne as its new Provost. Before becoming ARC CEO in July 2012, Professor Byrne held the dual role of Dean of Science and Director of the College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences at the Australian National University. Professor Byrne will replace Professor Max Lu, who is now Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Surrey in the United Kingdom. Professor Joanne Wright will continue to act as Provost pending Professor Byrne’s arrival at UQ later in the year.
University of Queensland and Pfizer Forms Partnership to Advance Drug Discovery in Australia

The University of Queensland and Pfizer have formed a partnership to advance drug discovery in Australia. The agreement with UniQuest, UQ’s main commercialisation company, is part of Pfizer’s Centers for Therapeutic Innovation (CTI) program. The alliance would enable collaboration between UQ researchers and Pfizer, with the aim of speeding drug discovery and development. Under the agreement, UQ researchers would have access to Pfizer’s world-class drug discovery and development capabilities. The aim of the partnership was to accelerate translational research projects and advance them from the lab to clinical trials. The ultimate goal is to identify validated drug candidates from institutions of research excellence and develop them through to clinical testing.
