The European Space Agency Awards Roke Manor Research Limited and its Partners, the University of Strathclyde and SCISYS, a Contract
Feb 2 15
The European Space Agency has awarded Roke Manor Research Limited and its partners, the University of Strathclyde (the project lead) and SCISYS, a contract to support the SysNova initiative for the development of new technologies in the space field. The three partners will research the possibility of launching a large number of cooperative nano-satellites, known as CubeSats, into space to support the prediction of severe weather events, as well as broader weather forecasting and climate modelling. A CubeSat is a type of miniaturised satellite currently being developed for space research, offering the potential for achieving revolutionary and affordable space capability in Low Earth Orbit for sensing and communications applications. These CubeSats would potentially replace the larger satellites currently orbiting Earth and would provide a cost effective means of increasing data acquisition. Roke's communications, networks and electronic sensor experts will design the payload of the CubeSat system and assess the technical capability and suitability for space-based deployment within a CubeSat. The performance and cost attributes of 96 different architectural mission CubeSat designs will be assessed.

Optos plc Announces £10 million collaboration with NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, and the Universities of Kent and Strathclyde to Develop New Early Detection Device for the Prevention of Sight Threatening Diseases
Oct 6 14
Optos plc announced £10 million collaboration with Scientists and Clinicians from NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, and the Universities of Kent and Strathclyde, for the development of a new imaging technology that could allow earlier detection of sight threatening eye disease. An initial £1.1 million study, funded by Innovate UK and Optos, will develop a laser based technology to monitor the function of the cells in the eye. The enhanced technology is expected to detect and monitor eye disease at a very early stage, enabling earlier intervention and better treatment regimes. The first clinical studies will focus on the leading causes of blindness - Age-Related Macular Degeneration, Glaucoma and Diabetic Retinopathy - and are expected to be completed in the first half of 2017. If successful, a further £9 million will be invested to develop a fully licensed medical device for the NHS by 2018.
