Ryerson University Key Developments

Loblaw Companies Limited and Ryerson University Establish Joe Fresh Centre for Fashion Innovation

Loblaw Companies Limited has established the Joe Fresh Centre for Fashion Innovation in partnership with Ryerson University's Fashion Zone. The Joe Fresh Centre for Fashion Innovation, made possible with a $1 million investment from Joe Fresh, will develop and fund Canada's emerging fashion-inspired businesses through Ryerson's Fashion Zone, an incubator that supports students and student entrepreneurship as part of the university's growing innovation ecosystem. The Joe Fresh Centre for Fashion Innovation and the Fashion Zone are modelled after the university's highly successful Digital Media Zone (DMZ) Canada's top-ranked university incubator, which is open to early-stage startups nationwide and Ryerson Futures (RFI), its affiliated business accelerator. The Digital Media Zone has incubated over 125 companies since launching in 2010. Working closely with the DMZ and the Fashion Zone, the Joe Fresh Centre for Fashion Innovation will incubate, develop and support Canada's fashion-inspired businesses. Participating companies and individuals will hone their business models and skills through structured mentorship with the Joe Fresh and Ryerson teams as well as Canadian business and fashion leaders. Joe Fresh has maintained a far-reaching commitment to the future of the Canadian fashion industry, including education and support of new business and design talent. The goal of the Joe Fresh Centre for Fashion Innovation is to foster a 360-degree approach to mentorship that will best position young entrepreneurs for real world success. The centre will encompass Canadian startups in all fashion-related fields, including design, production, technology and professional services.

Presagis and Ryerson University Announces Strategic Innovation Partnership to Develop New UAV Technologies

Presagis and Ryerson University are kicking off a strategic innovation partnership to develop new UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) technologies. These research activities are supported by a grant from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) Engage program and will be led by Ryerson University researcher Dr. Joon Chung. The objective of this project is to research and develop reconfigurable UAV instrument panels through the development of virtual UAV Ground Control Stations. The virtual Ground Control Station will explore the potential of supporting multiple UAV applications with switchable instrument panels. In addition to these reconfigurable instrument panels, the research project will also be used to drive user experience enhancements to Presagis' software. Presagis will be involved in every phase of the research and development effort, and will provide University with the complete Presagis Modeling and Simulation software suite, including Creator, Terra Vista, Vega Prime, STAGE, FlightSIM, HeliSIM, and VAPS XT for Simulation. In addition to the in-kind contribution of software, a Presagis software engineer will be directly involved in the development of the proposed UAV instrument panels and virtual Ground Control Stations.
