Capella University Launches School of Nursing and Health Sciences

Capella University announced that it will launch a new School of Nursing and Health Sciences in January 2015, further demonstrating its commitment to providing competency-based advanced education in nursing and health care. The new school will offer the existing doctoral, master's, and bachelor's online degrees and certificates in Nursing, Health Care Administration, and Public Health, including its CCNE-accredited Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), Master of Science in Nursing (MSN), and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP). Other degree programs moving to the new school include Capella's Master of Public Health (MPH), Doctor of Public Health (DrPH), Master of Health Administration (MHA), Doctor of Health Administration (DHA) and many health care-related specializations and concentrations, such as Health Care Leadership, Epidemiology, Health Care Operations, Social and Behavioral Sciences, and Nursing Leadership and Administration. The nursing and health care programs were previously housed in Capella's School of Public Service Leadership, which has been restructured to focus on master's and doctoral degrees and certificates in Human Services, Public Administration, and Public Safety, along with many public service-related specializations and concentrations, including Criminal Justice, Emergency Management, Fire Services, Forensics, Homeland Security, Social and Community Services, Nonprofit Management, Public Policy and Collaborative Governance.
Capella University Announces New Online MHA and EdD Specializations and Redesign of Online Master's Degree and Certificate in Human Resource Management

Capella University has announced three new specializations. They include a Health Care Leadership specialization in its Master of Health Administration (MHA) online degree, and new Adult Education, and Curriculum and Instruction specializations in its Doctor of Education (EdD) online degree. Capella has also redesigned its online Master of Science in Human Resource Management and its Human Resource Management certificate, and added other new educational opportunities in the human resource management field. Capella's new Health Care Leadership specialization combines evidence-based leadership theory with competencies aligned with the National Center for Healthcare Leadership's (NCHL) Health Leadership Competency Model, a nationally recognized and scientifically validated approach to health care leadership education. Capella's efficient, competency-based curriculum allows students to complete their MHA in as little as 18 months -- sooner if a student has transfer credits. In addition, Capella MHA students can simultaneously earn a Health Care Administration certificate within the first year of their MHA program, for no additional time or cost. To meet the growing need for education administrators in both P--12 and higher education, Capella's new EdD specializations share core courses that address foundational educational leadership skills. In addition, the Adult Education specialization includes courses on leadership and managerial issues in an adult learning setting; program planning and evaluation; adult development stages; and issues and trends in the field. The Curriculum and Instruction specialization offers courses on such topics as supervision and evaluation of curriculum, instruction, and assessment programs; innovative instruction models; curriculum mapping; and the use of technology as a tool in curricular development and assessment. Both online EdD specializations also feature an applied research project and a curriculum designed to deliver skills and knowledge that can be immediately applied on the job, allowing students to start making a greater impact right away. Capella reviewed and revised its MS in Human Resource Management and certificate to ensure that they were aligned to the most current industry standards and employer needs. The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) has acknowledged that Capella University's MS in Human Resource Management fully aligns with SHRM's HR Curriculum Guidebook and Templates. Students have the option to earn a Human Resource Management certificate while working on their master's, providing the skills and credibility to make a more immediate impact. Capella also offers PHR(R)/SPHR(R), and GPHR(R) preparation courses that can be taken as stand-alone courses or as elective credits toward their MS in Human Resource Management. Students who already have these industry certifications can earn credit for their knowledge through Capella's Prior Learning Assessment process, allowing them to finish their master's sooner, saving them time and money. Students can also pursue a Combined BS/MS Option in Human Resource Management, which allows students to take master's-level courses while earning their bachelor's degree, saving time and money over the cost of pursuing each degree separately.
Capella University, Inc. Launches Innovative Competency Map Dashboard to Align Student Learning with Employer Needs

Capella University launched a competency map to all of its students. The competency map is a visual dashboard that lets adult learners track their demonstration of career-relevant competencies throughout each of their courses. As of Sept. 30, 2013, approximately 35,000 students were enrolled at Capella, a regionally accredited online university that has built its reputation by providing high quality online degree programs for working adults. Competencies are the specific skills and knowledge that contribute to success in specific professions. Over the last several years, Capella faculty, curriculum specialists, instructional designers, assessment specialists, and research analysts have collaborated to create the competency maps by aligning curricular, instructional, and assessment practices. As students complete assignments, the competency maps compile a picture of the career-relevant competencies being mastered. Using an intuitive visual display, they reveal a real-time view of where students are, what lies ahead, and where they should focus to be successful. The competency maps are updated as soon as faculty grade an assignment using criterion-referenced scoring guides, and are accessible 24/7. Capella has also recently received U.S. Department of Education approval of its FlexPath programs, making it the first university to offer competency-based bachelor's and master's degree programs that utilize an approved direct-assessment learning model as opposed to the traditional credit-hour standard. The two Capella programs approved to operate under the FlexPath model are the Bachelor of Science in Business and the Master of Business Administration (MBA). The FlexPath programs offer the potential to significantly reduce the cost of a degree, accelerate the time required for degree completion, and better align learning to the needs of employers and society.
