Edison Claims $7.57 Billion Compensation from Mitsubishi for US Nuclear Plant Shutdown
Jul 30 15
Southern California Edison (SCE) and Edison Material Supply LLC (EMS) have increased compensation claims from Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) and Mitsubishi Nuclear Energy Systems to $7.57 billion, relating to the shutdown of the San Onofre nuclear facility in California, US. SCE, which is a unit of US-based Edison International, and others had previously sought at least $4 billion through the dispute. Under the compensation claim, SCE alleges that MHI failed to properly design or promptly repair defective steam generators at the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS). Along with three other companies, SCE has filed a complaint supporting the charges before the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), which is acting as the arbitrator for the issue.
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. and Mitsubishi Nuclear Energy Systems Inc. to Defend $4 billion Claim over US Nuke Plant
Oct 17 13
Southern California Edison and its subsidiary Edison Material Supply are asking for arbitration over the claim against Mitsubishi and its wholly-owned US subsidiary Mitsubishi Nuclear Energy System. The original dispute, first raised in July, reported that SCE had to close San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station because replacement steam generators supplied by Mitsubishi were defective. The arbitration, intended to avoid a court battle, is being sought because the two sides have so far failed to reach agreement. Through the arbitration process, Mitsubishi decided to aggressively defend itself by accurately representing the facts involved and the applicable legal principles. At the same time, Mitsubishi will take actions for its counterclaims because it has been damaged by inappropriate actions by SCE.
