Linklaters has appointed Antnio Soares as national managing partner for Lisbon. He takes over from Pedro Siza Vieira, head of the banking and projects practice in Lisbon. Antnio, head of corporate finance in Portugal, joined Linklaters as a partner in 2002 when the firm first established an office in Portugal. His main practice areas include equity and debt capital markets and private and public M&A. He has extensive experience in mergers and acquisitions, public offerings, privatisations, takeover bids and companies restructurings, dealing with the most complex transactions, both national and cross border. He will continue to head the Lisbon corporate finance practice, sharing his time between client work and management responsibilities.

Steinhoff International May Buy Poundland

Steinhoff International Holdings N.V. (JSE:SNH) is looking to buy Poundland Group plc (LSE:PLND). Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer and Linklaters are advising South African retailer Steinhoff as it considers whether to make an offer for Poundland. The potential bid comes after Steinhoff acquired 22.78% of Poundland's issued share capital, with the retailer having until mid-July to announce a firm intention to make an offer.
