It was established in 1936 and is based in Washington, District of Columbia.

Urban Land Institute Names Adam J. Smolyar as Chief Marketing and Membership Officer

The Urban Land Institute has appointed Adam J. Smolyar as its chief marketing and membership officer. Smolyar has extensive experience in branding, strategic communications, marketing, membership recruitment and retention, and information technology. Smolyar is part of the executive staff team headed by ULI Global Chief Executive Officer Patrick L. Phillips. As chief marketing and membership officer, he will work with the institute's leadership to strengthen member engagement and improve the member value of ULI's many offerings, ultimately reinforcing its reputation as the preeminent global authority on land use and urban development. In his global role at ULI, Smolyar will oversee the marketing, membership, strategic communications and information technology teams, and he will lead a coordinated effort to showcase the wide range of ULI programs, products and services that support the development of prosperous, resilient and livable communities around the world. Smolyar has more than 15 years of experience in marketing-related functions, including brand management, marketing and communications, digital/social media marketing, marketing research and analysis, customer/membership experience, and technology initiatives. Most recently, he served as senior vice president of strategic communications at the New York City headquarters office of Savills Studley.

Urban Land Institute Announces Board Appointments

The Houston District Council of the Urban Land Institute has named David Kim as its new executive director. Kim will replace Ann Taylor, who was recently appointed to the newly created role of vice president at Houston-based Midway Cos. Kim joins ULI after previously serving as deputy assistant director for the city of Houston's Housing and Community Development Department, where he focused on addressing food deserts and homelessness. He has also practiced real estate at Cochran, Baker, Williams & Matthiesen LLP and developed homes with Covenant Neighborhoods Inc. Kim began his career as a corporate lawyer with Akin, Gump, Strauss, Hauer & Feld LLP. Earlier this month, the group also named Bill Odle as the new Houston District Council Chair effective July 1, 2016. He will replace Riser, who served in the position from 2014 to 2016. Odle is managing principal of the Houston office of TBG Partners Inc. and serves on the board of directors. He has been a member of ULI since 2003.

Urban Land Institute Names Patricia R. Healy as Chairman of the Americas

Patricia R. 'Trish' Healy, founding principal of Hyde Street Holdings, LLC in Raleigh, North Carolina, has been named Chairman of the Americas for the Urban Land Institute (ULI). Healy, a longtime ULI member, ULI Foundation Governor, and former ULI Trustee, will serve in this position through June 30, 2018. The ULI Americas Chairman is a new volunteer position that reflects the Institute's efforts to more effectively serve and learn from members in very different markets as ULI continues to grow worldwide. The ULI Americas region encompasses the United States, Canada, Latin America, and South America. The post held by Healy is part of the creation of a new ULI global governance structure, which is being overseen by ULI Global Chairman Randall K. Rowe. The structure already includes a ULI Europe Chairman position, currently held by Roger Orf, Partner and Head of Real Estate in Europe for Apollo Management; and ULI Asia Pacific chairmanships for North Asia, South Asia, and Japan, which are now held by Raymond Chow, Executive Director, Hongkong Land Limited, Hong Kong; Peter Holland, Director, Urbis, Melbourne, Australia; and Hiroo Mori, Executive Vice President, Mori Building Company Ltd., Tokyo, respectively. Healy has a strong record of volunteerism with ULI. She currently serves on ULI's Governance and Nominating Committee, and previously served as Chairman of ULI's Inclusivity Task Force. Locally, Healy serves on the Board and Executive Committee of Catholic Charities in Raleigh.
