ICE Announces New Water Supply Tunnel to Expand Capacity at the Cachí Hydroelectric Plant

ICE reported that a new water supply tunnel to expand capacity at the Cachí hydroelectric plant has been completed. The 6km, 4.9m-wide tunnel took a year and a half to bore and will parallel an existing tunnel. The expansion to 160MW from 100MW is due to be ready next year and will allow the use of surplus Reventazón river flow during the rainy season. Cachí came online in 1966. The Central American Bank for Economic Integration is helping finance the $180 million project which is part of the country's power generation plan.
