Southwire Co. has signed an agreement with ABB Inc. to purchase a high-voltage and extra-high-voltage (HV/EHV) underground transmission cable manufacturing plant in Huntersville, North Carolina, U.S. Through the acquisition, Southwire adds EHV cable products to its portfolio and expands its capacity to produce HV cable. The agreement also paves the way for Southwire to develop a strategic relationship with ABB. The 240,000-sq-ft (22,300-sq-m) three-year-old plant features technology for producing HV/EHV underground transmission cables ranging from 230 kV to 400 kV. Helping to strengthen North America's power transmission infrastructure, these cables distribute massive amounts of electricity and renewable energy - including wind and solar - in support of the nation's smart grid initiative.

Southwire Company named Rich Stinson as its president as the company begins a transition in leadership. Stinson, now group president of electrical systems and services for Eaton Corporation, will join Southwire on Oct. 15. After initially serving as president under President and CEO Stu Thorn, Stinson will assume the role of chief executive officer following an orderly transition period. Thorn previously announced plans to retire after more than 14 years leading Southwire. His retirement closes a remarkable career of service to the company and its shareholders.
