An Engineering Graduate Graduate Sues against University of WA over Thesis Leak

An engineering graduate is suing the University of WA for allegedly sharing his final-year thesis on an award-winning invention with other students. Man Mohan Singh claims a student used Facebook last year to send him a photo of his thesis, which had been leaked despite UWA signing a confidentiality agreement to protect his intellectual property. The 23-year-old spent more than a year developing a high-performance material that can potentially be used in the aircraft, aerospace and automobile industries. According to a writ filed in the Supreme Court, the invention outperforms all existing materials. Mr. Singh was flown to Seattle to speak about his thesis at an AeroMat conference after he entered a competition run by the CSIRO. He claims the university executed a confidentiality agreement in June 2012 after recognizing the information in his thesis had commercial value. He believes the university agreed not to disclose his strictly confidential research without his consent. Mr. Singh got a Facebook message from a UWA student in July last year asking for a copy of his thesis. He refused the request and received a response about a month later that included the word cheers and a photo of the cover of his thesis. Mr. Singh said he was told his thesis supervisor had given the student and the UWA Motorsport team a copy of the document.
