MANCHESTER Airports Group Plans to Close One of its Terminals
Jun 2 15
MANCHESTER Airports Group announced that it plans to close one of the terminals at the country's third biggest airport as part of a £1 billion investment programme designed to revamp the site over the next decade. Encouraged by government ambitions to develop a so-called 'Northern Powerhouse', as well as plans for the High Speed Two (HS2) rail link, MAG bosses hope to boost capacity at Manchester and attract more long-haul carriers by redesigning one of its three terminals and scrapping another. Under plans announced by MAG, Terminal 1 will be closed by 2022 and is likely to be redeveloped, while Terminal 2 will be expanded. The third terminal building, which will be adapted to accommodate more passengers, will be linked to the second and self-service check-in facilities will also be introduced. The airport currently accommodates 23 million travellers a year, which will rise to 30 million after the work is completed. The proposals are separate to plans to build an Airport City of offices, shops, parkland, warehouses and manufacturing sites in Manchester, backed by Chinese investment. Once completed, Mr. Cornish estimated that the number of staff at the site will double to 40,000. The redevelopment is expected to reduce dividends in coming years.

Lynda Shillaw has been appointed by Manchester Airports Group as divisional chief executive for property. She joins from Scottish Widows Investment Partnership. As revealed by Estates Gazette, the post has been vacant since Karen Campbell resigned from the role just eight months after joining, and just days after a controversial deal with Beijing Construction and Engineering group was signed. Shillaw, who was director of real estate at SWIP, will join MAG from 1 June 2014. She will report to group chief executive Charlie Cornish, overseeing the group's £571 million property division across four airport facilities, most notably the £800 million Airport City development.
