Empresas Públicas de Medellín E.S.P. Key Developments

Empresas Públicas de Medellín Opens Thermal Plant

Empresas Públicas de Medellín (EPM) has opened a thermal plant to supply air conditioning and heating to government buildings of Antioquía department, including the local assembly, tax and customs offices. The so-called thermal district will extend to the Medellín mayoral office, municipal council and the Valle de Aburrá metropolitan area. The thermal plant, located in Medellín's La Alpujarra area, seat of the city and municipal government offices, reduces the use of ozone-damaging substances by 100% and CO2 emissions by 30%. The plant produces heat or cold air centrally and distributes it via underground piping to the respective buildings, and can be used for the air conditioning of spaces such as offices or households or as a coolant in industrial processes. The supply of cold air from the thermal center eliminates the need for individual buildings to run air conditioning systems, resulting in significant cost savings.
