Shell Deutschland Oil Opens New Hydrogen Fuelling Station in Hamburg

Shell Deutschland Oil has opened a new hydrogen fuelling station in Hamburg, Germany. The fuelling station features onsite hydrogen production based on electricity, which allows grid balancing and storage services by turning on/off the production. The feature will help in integrating fluctuating renewable electricity in Germany. The first fuelling station in Germany has achieved Clean Energy Partnership (CEP) approval by complying with the 2014 version of the SAE J2601. The standard will ensure reliable fuelling of hydrogen at 70MPa pressure, enabling hydrogen vehicles to travel long distances. The inauguration of hydrogen refuelling station in Hamburg is part of a planned initial network of 50 stations in the country by 2015. The initiative forms a part of the EUR350-million (USD 369-million) H2Mobility Germany initiative. The station in Hamburg is based on H2 Logic technology from H2 Logic. H2 Logic's station complies with the SAE J2601 standard achieving fast fuelling of hydrogen, which is required by major car manufacturers. Also, approved compliance with the SAE J2601 standard is required by the public-private CEP in Germany. The H2 Logic technology is already in operation in several European countries powering fuel cell electric vehicles.
