Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China, Ltd. Key Developments

Boeing and Commercial Aircraft Corp. of China Sign New Agreement to Expand Joint Research Collaboration

Boeing and Commercial Aircraft Corp. of China (COMAC) on November 2, 2016 signed a new agreement to expand their joint research collaboration in support of the long-term sustainable growth of commercial aviation. The two companies, which signed an initial collaboration agreement in March 2012, have been researching ways to improve aviation’s fuel efficiency and greenhouse-gas emissions reduction, including sustainable aviation biofuel and air traffic management efficiency. Through this new agreement, signed at the Zhuhai Airshow, the companies will explore six areas of mutually beneficial research through the renamed Boeing-COMAC Sustainable Aviation Technology Center. They will also continue to exchange commercial aviation market forecasts. Research areas for the Sustainable Aviation Technology Center will include: technologies supporting sustainable aviation fuel development and assessing the benefit to aviation of using these technologies; ATM technologies and applications; environmentally sustainable manufacturing, including enhanced recycling of materials; technologies to enhance the airplane cabin environment related to environmental stewardship and air travel by aging populations; new industry or international standards in aviation energy conservation and emissions reduction; improvements in workplace safety during cabin and ground operations.

COMAC Selects Victrex Floor Brackets for Regional Jet ARJ21

Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China, Ltd., or COMAC, has selected Victrex floor brackets for its regional jet ARJ21. The company's additional services, beyond supplying high-performing VICTREX PAEK, Polyaryletherketone, included simulation analysis, tools for design optimization and on-site processing support. As a result, greater design freedom, easier manufacturing and less weight compared to traditionally used aluminum led to the replacement of the metal. COMAC's ARJ21 (Advanced Regional Jet for the 21st Century), a type of turbofan jet, is a short- to medium-range regional jet. Within the ARJ21 aircraft, internal loads are supported by various systems including structural beams. Floor brackets are positioned on these beams to provide support within a gap between the loaded beams and the aircraft flooring above. Typically, these brackets would have been manufactured in aluminum; the new polymer solution promotes increased production efficiency via rapid injection molding of the part and is contributing to higher efficiency of the regional jet through weight savings and design improvements that simplify the installation process.
