University of California Appoints Robert Powell as an Executive Committee Governor for Lawrence Livermore National Security, LLC and Los Alamos National Security, LLC

The University of California has appointed UC Davis professor Robert Powell as an executive committee governor for the management teams overseeing the Lawrence Livermore and Los Alamos national labs. Powell's appointment to the Lawrence Livermore National Security LLC (LLNS) and Los Alamos National Security LLC (LANS) Boards of Governors takes effect immediately, and includes chairing the LLC's Science and Technology Committee. A professor in UC Davis' chemical engineering and material science department, Powell replaces the outgoing William Frazer.
Age Discrimination Trial Against Lawrence Livermore National Security, LLC to Begin in Alameda County Superior Court

After more than four years of intense litigation, the age discrimination claims of 5 of the 130 plaintiffs in Andrews, et. al. v. Lawrence Livermore National Security, LLC, Case No. RG09453596 will be tried to a jury in Alameda County Superior Court, Department 20, before the Honorable Robert B. Freedman. This is the second trial for these 5 plaintiffs. In 2008, 430 permanent employees at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory were laid off shortly after the lab's privatization by Lawrence Livermore National Security, LLC (LLNS), which is led by Bechtel Corporation, the multinational construction and engineering company based in San Francisco. In May of 2009, 130 of those employees, represented by the law firm of Gwilliam, Ivary, Chiosso, Cavalli & Brewer, filed suit against LLNS for wrongful termination, breach of contract, age discrimination, and other individual claims.

Parney Albright announced that he is stepping down as director of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory at the end of October 2013 to pursue his broader interests and contributions to the U.S. national security enterprise. Albright has served as Laboratory director since December 2011. Albright also steps down as president of Lawrence Livermore National Security, LLC. In the interim, the LLNS Board of Governors has approved the appointment of Bret Knapp, principal associate director for weapons programs at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), as acting LLNL director and LLNS president effective Nov. 1, 2013. Knapp is a recognized expert in national security with 26 years of work experience at LLNL in programmatic roles of increasing responsibility before he joined the senior management team at LANL in 2006.
