Space Systems/Loral Secures Contract to Study On-Orbit Satellite Assembly of Geostationary Communications Satellites

Space Systems/Loral announced it was awarded a contract from the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to study on-orbit robotic assembly of geostationary communications satellites. Called Dragonfly, the program is designed to enable larger and more powerful satellites that cannot be launched fully assembled, to be packaged in pieces within a standard launch vehicle fairing. The study is scheduled for a five-month first phase during which SSL will seek to demonstrate how assembling satellites on orbit could lower satellite cost and mass, while at the same time enabling higher satellite performance. SSL is planning to further develop on-orbit satellite assembly capability and as part of this effort, has submitted a proposal to NASA for collaboration on taking the concept to a ground demonstration followed by a flight application.

Space Systems/Loral Builds Satellite for Intelsat

Space Systems/Loral (SSL) announced that a satellite designed and built for Intelsat S.A., was launched on August 20, 2015 and is successfully performing post-launch maneuvers according to plan. The satellite, Intelsat 34, deployed its solar arrays on schedule following its launch aboard an Ariane 5 launch vehicle from the European Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana. It will begin firing its main thruster later August 21, in order to propel it toward its final geosynchronous orbit.

Space Systems/Loral Built Satellite for Embratel Star One Begins Post-launch Maneuvers

Space Systems/Loral announced that a satellite designed and built for Embratel Star One, was launched and is successfully performing post-launch maneuvers according to plan. The satellite, Star One C4, deployed its solar arrays on schedule following its launch aboard an Ariane 5 launch vehicle from the European Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana. It will begin firing its main thruster later in order to propel it toward its final geosynchronous orbit. Star One C4 features 48 Ku-band transponders, which will be used for Broadcast Satellite Services from its orbital slot at 70 West longitude. The satellite will provide Direct-To-Home television service in Brazil and will expand Embratel Star One's broadcasting services to other Latin American countries and to the United States. SSL is also building a second satellite for Embratel Star One, which will be launched in 2016. Star One D1 is a multi-mission satellite that includes a high throughput satellite payload and will be used for telecommunications, television broadcast, broadband, Internet access and other services such as digital inclusion in Brazil and in the Latin American region.
