ABX Air, Inc. Key Developments

Air Transport Services Group, Inc. Announces Executive Changes of ABX Air, Effective February 1, 2017

Air Transport Services Group, Inc. announced the retirement of John Starkovich, President of ABX Air, Inc., an airline subsidiary of the company, and the appointment of his replacement, David Soaper, effective February 1, 2017. Starkovich joined ABX Air in 1998 as Senior Director of Labor Relations. He held a variety of roles in senior management, including Chief Labor Counsel, and Vice President of Human Resources and Corporate Services, before becoming President of the airline in March 2012. His 35-year career also included positions with Burlington Northern Santa Fe LLC.

ABX Air Announces Update on Labor Matter

Air Transport Services Group, Inc. announced that U.S. District Court Judge Timothy S. Black has issued an order granting ABX Air’s motion to convert a temporary restraining order into a preliminary injunction prohibiting work stoppages and other service interruptions of ATSG’s cargo airline subsidiary ABX Air, Inc. by ABX Air’s pilot employees represented by the Airline Professionals Association of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, Local 1224 (IBT). On November 23, 2016, Judge Black determined that disagreements between ABX Air and its pilots over work scheduling issues constitute a minor dispute and must be resolved under terms of the labor agreement between ABX Air and the union. The preliminary injunction effectively extends that order pending an as-yet unscheduled adjudication on a permanent injunction.

ABX Air's Pilots Striking after Alleging Unfair Practices

The pilots with ABX Air, a subsidiary of Air Transport Services Group Inc., have been striking after alleging unfair practices, but the airline announced that U.S. District Court Judge Timothy S. Black determined the labor dispute is minor and ordered the union and ABX must resolve differences through arbitration and their labor agreement. The pilot strike made national headlines, with speculation over whether the strike just before the holidays could harm the e-commerce giant during its peak season. The pilots, represented by Airline Professionals Association of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, Local 1224, have been striking over concerns about being called in during off days for emergency shifts. The Wilmington Air Park has seen renewed interest since Amazon announced earlier this year that it is using the airport to pilot an air cargo operation. ABX's parent signed an agreement to fly 20 Prime Air planes by 2018 and is already flying 35 flights a day with 14 aircraft. The striking pilots are picketing outside of ABX Air's headquarters in Wilmington and outside DHL's North American hub at the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport. Earlier this year, pilots at ABX Air and four other cargo carriers that fly for DHL voted with 99% support to strike if it decided a strike was necessary.
