Plastic Logic and Novaled Form Alliance for Flexible Amoled Display
Feb 7 14
Plastic Logic's alliance with Novaled for flexible active matrix OLED (AMOLED) displays will focus on licensing jointly developed technology rather than full-scale production. The companies developed a glass-free flexible four-inch mono AMOLED with 100 pixels per inch resolution at Plastic Logic's Cambridge, U.K., research-and-development facility. It combines Plastic Logic's organic thin-film transistor backplane with Novaled's organic conductivity doping technology that's designed improve the injection and transport of electrical charges to the emission layer in an OLED stack. The doping technology, combined with Novaled's proprietary host materials, improves conductivity of the transport layers. While the display is strictly a prototype with no plans for adding production to Plastic Logic's Dresden, Germany, plant that makes electrophoretic displays, it could be a springboard to licensing deals. The companies are starting a partnership program, the terms of which could range from consulting to full access to jointly developed IP. The timing of the partnership is largely tied to potential customers converting some LCD production lines to making OLEDs. If customers were to license the technology, it would take about a year to get to production. Plastic Logic and Novaled will be keyed to licensing the technology to partners, who could add features like color to flexible displays. Plastic Logic will likely pursue AMOLEDs for its flexible technology, using electrophoretic versions only if there's demand.
