University Of Massachusetts Appoints Robert Caret as Chancellor

The University System of Maryland has named Robert Caret, president of the University of Massachusetts System and a former president of Towson University, as its next chancellor. Caret will succeed William E. Kirwan, who announced in May that he would step down after 12 years at the helm. Caret said he had orally accepted the job offer and has not yet formally resigned. Caret said he would focus on two primary goals: ensuring students can get a high-quality education at an affordable price, and continuing "to build a research-based economic engine".

University System of Maryland Announces Catherine J. Motz to its Board

Gov. Martin O'Malley has appointed his former deputy chief of staff to the University System of Maryland Board of Regents. Catherine J. "Cassie" Motz, who worked for O'Malley for seven years, joined the 17-member board July 2. Motz replaces long-time board member Patricia Florestano, who has reached the end of her term. Motz is currently the executive director of the CollegeBound Foundation Inc., a Baltimore nonprofit that helps students attend college.

University System of Maryland Announces Executive Changes

William E. Kirwan, chancellor of the University System of Maryland (USM) since August 2002, announced that he will step down from his leadership position after a career spanning more than 50 years in public higher education. At the request of the USM Board of Regents, Kirwan will remain as chancellor until the board conducts a national search and chooses his successor. Kirwan served as vice president of academic affairs and chair of the Department of Mathematics at UMCP.
