Doble Engineering Company announced the release of its Geomagnetic Disturbance Risk Mitigation Services. The new program is designed to help customers comply with the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) Standard TPL-007-1 and determine if their transformers are susceptible to geomagnetically-induced currents (GIC) triggered by solar storms. Doble's program helps applicable transmission and generation owners conduct initial and ongoing assessments of the potential impact of severe geomagnetic disturbances and develop targeted mitigation plans. GMDs occur naturally and cause quasi-DC current flow through wye-grounded transformer windings. While the result is not always catastrophic, certain factors influence the degree of risk to the grid and power system equipment, like geomagnetic latitude, ground resistivity, network topology, storm duration, loading and equipment design. Depending on the transformer, a given GMD event may impact your equipment differently. The key is to know which equipment presents the greater risk and understand how to best prepare should the so-called 'perfect storm' of space weather hit.
Doble Engineering Company Receives Contract from National Grid Saudi Arabia for Advanced Services to Support New Phase of Power Grid Reliability Initiative

National Grid Saudi Arabia has contracted Doble Engineering Company for advanced services to support a new phase of its power grid reliability initiative, which will expand transformer health programs into additional regions. The new project will extend this approach on additional transformers located mostly in the Central Operating Areas and will continue to review data for the other regions. This will effectively bring all of the organization's transformers under diagnostic surveillance. The new agreement also includes the continued review of testing and maintenance practices, a comprehensive study of National Grid Saudi Arabia's in-house electrical insulating oil laboratories, and the ability to leverage Doble's experience for the ongoing condition assessment of transformers.
Doble Engineering Company Releases EMI Surveyor, Non-Invasive Testing Solution for High-Voltage Equipment

Doble Engineering Company announced the introduction of the EMI Surveyor, a non-invasive surveying solution that helps generation and industrial plants optimize maintenance and improve outage planning. Based on Doble's decades of electromagnetic interference (EMI) testing experience, the surveyor can detect more than 70 different electrical insulation and mechanical defects in generators, motors, bus duct systems, transformers, switchgear, cable terminations and other high voltage equipment. Using this information, asset owners can reduce costs and the risk of system failures by identifying areas where maintenance is not needed. EMI testing is performed while HV plant assets are in service, enabling more efficient outage management and preparation for inspections, maintenance and prioritization of needed repairs. With the EMI Surveyor, data collection is completely passive, and there are no permanent high-voltage connections, arc flash concerns, or interference with plant operations.
