CamSemi Launches Two New Controllers with Extra Protection for Smartphone Batteries

CamSemi announced specific variants of its recently launched C2173 and C2174 fast start Primary Side Sensing controllers to comply with an additional battery protection requirement that is being increasingly specified by smart phone handset manufacturers. The new C2175 and C2176 controllers include an intelligent foldback feature, offering output under voltage protection and target low cost MoU-compliant, USB smartphone chargers and other universal input applications rated at 8 W and 10 W respectively. This additional protection feature within the two variants is activated when a fault within the handset's normal charging routine or with one of its battery cells causes the output voltage to fall below 60% of its specified value. The controller shuts down the charger before issuing regular restart pulses to maintain its fast-start performance. The pulses either restart the normal charge cycle or incrementally charge the battery to a 3 V threshold before normal charging can continue. The new C2175 and C2176 PSS controllers offer smartphone charger manufacturers all the same features, cost and performance benefits as the company’s other C2170 controllers targeting higher power applications including: more efficient switching of bipolar transistors to deliver significant margins on the higher operating efficiencies required by DoE level 6 regulations. Five star (less than 30 mW) no-load power (NLP) performance, also with significant margin and fast-start charging without needing an active start-up switch. An integrated output transient detection feature can be used to help manufacturers further reduce NLP while maintaining fast transient response. C2175 is packaged in SOT23-6, C2176 in SOP8 and samples of both controllers are available now.

CamSemi Launches New Controller for Low Cost USB Chargers for Smartphones

CamSemi announced the first in a series of planned new products that will extend the company's recently launched C2170 family of next generation Primary Side Sensing controllers into higher power markets. The new C2172PX8 PSS controller targets low cost, MoU-compliant USB chargers for smartphones, tablets and other universal input applications rated to 7.5 W, whereas the first two C2170 controllers launched in June are optimised for applications to 4 W and 6.5 W. The new C2172PX8 controller combines the company's recently patented bipolar transistor drive scheme, advanced PSS technology and several power-saving techniques to help manufacturers develop ultra low cost, more energy-efficient BJT-based solutions. These approaches enable simpler circuits with reduced component counts and system costs but with significant performance and manufacturing advantages over competitive approaches. The company's improved drive technology boosts switching performance and delivers higher active mode efficiency, greater product robustness from more Reverse Bias Safe Operating Area margin and the flexibility to accommodate a wide range of low cost BJTs for further cost savings. C2172PX8 also offers voltage regulation of +/- 2% and current regulation of +/- 3% allowing more margin for thermal design; no-load power consumption is well below 30 mW; and IC power consumption and design have been optimised to enable fast start of 500 ms but without needing the extra cost, space and complexity of an active start-up switch.
