Tesoro Hawaii Corp. Begins Layoffs of First 165 Employees
Jun 3 13
Tesoro Hawaii Corp. is proceeding with its first round of layoffs, nearly two weeks earlier than it anticipated. Lance Tanaka, spokesman for Tesoro Hawaii, told PBN that 'some' of the 165 employees scheduled for layoffs due to the transition of its Kapolei refinery into an import, storage and distribution terminal received their two-week layoff notices. The company is still in discussions with potential buyers of its Kapolei assets, including the refinery portion, which has been 'mothballed' in case a buyer emerges from the discussions. The first wave of employees will be laid off between June 17 and June 21. A second and final group of employees that was previously scheduled for layoffs has been put on hold, at least for now. In a letter to the state Department of Labor and Industrial Relations, Tesoro Hawaii said that its employees would be laid off during a 14-day period beginning on June 14 with a second group scheduled for layoffs during a 14-day period starting on June 28 and a third group that could be laid off on July 12. Employees originally were going to be laid off on April 30, but conversations with a potential buyer made the company extend that date.
