Holt, Renfrew & Co., Limited Key Developments

Holt Renfrew to Open Store in Toronto

Holt Renfrew is proceeding with plans to expand its luxury retail footprint with the opening of its first store devoted solely to menswear. Holt Renfrew Men will launch in downtown Toronto on October 1, 2014. The two-level, 1,532-squaremetre location is close to its existing Bloor Street, and part of a plan to expand its store network by 40%. The dedicated menswear store is part of a $300-million investment by the retailer which will involve updates to stores in Vancouver, Calgary and Toronto before the end of 2017, and the unveiling of new stores in Montreal and Mississauga, Ont. Hallmarks of the menswear store will include customized services such as shoe shines, monogramming and a dedicated space for bespoke tailoring. The store features novel artistic touches from a bronze sculpture by Canadian artist Dennis Lin to chain-link curtains on the upper level and dangling wooden shoe inserts in the footwear section. An expansive array of artifacts from NHL legend Conn Smythe's collection will also be displayed, including a Toronto Maple Leafs mini Stanley Cup and ring and Muhammad Ali's boxing gloves.

Holt Renfrew to Close Ottawa, Quebec City Stores in 2015; Plans to Open Stores

Holt Renfrew will close its smaller stores in Ottawa and Quebec City to help it expand in other Canadian cities, as well as open a new store in Mississauga, Ont. They decided to close smaller 35,000-square-foot regional stores in Ottawa and Quebec City by January 2015 as a result. The closure in Ottawa will result in 72 layoffs, while the Quebec City closure will lead to 85 layoffs. The company announced that it is strategically focusing store expansion plans on markets in Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Toronto and Montreal. Holt Renfrew is also opening a new 120,000-square-foot store at Square One in Mississauga, west of Toronto, in spring 2016. Plans for its stores will see a 40% increase in space across Canada. That includes: an expanded 120,000-square-foot store at Yorkdale in Toronto; a new 220,000-square-foot Montreal store to be completed at the end 2017, making it among the large in the Holt Renfrew network; Holt Renfrew Men to open this fall at 100 Bloor St. WA in Toronto; Vancouver, Calgary and Toronto (Bloor Street) stores will be renovated and expanded.
