La Salle University to Lay Off 3% of its Workforce

La Salle University issued a letter that said it will lay off 23 employees as it faces lower freshman enrollment and budget deficits. The university is expecting a freshman class of 725, well below a target figure and 135 less than 2014 freshman class of 860 students. Total undergraduate enrollment is expected to be 3,164. This crisis is affecting Catholic universities in particular as parishes are shuttered and Catholic high schools consolidate.

La Salle University Trustee and School of Business alumnus Stephen T. Zarrilli was recently named Chair of the University's Board of Trustees. A La Salle Trustee since 2012, Zarrilli serves as President and Chief Executive Officer of publicly traded Safeguard Scientifics Inc. Zarrilli succeeds William R. Sautter, La Salle School of Business alumnus and President and Chief Executive Officer of Elliott-Lewis Corporation, who served as board chair for nine years. Zarrilli will work closely with newly appointed President Colleen M. Hanycz, Ph.D., who formerly served as Principal (a Canadian equivalent of President) at Brescia University College in London, Ontario, Canada. Both the new President and new Chair began their terms on July 1, 2015. Zarrilli has built a career spanning 30 years in executive strategic, financial, and operational roles. He has held various positions as chief financial officer and chief executive officer of public and private companies, demonstrating the ability to successfully grow and manage a diverse selection of enterprises. Zarrilli has been very engaged with the University as a Trustee and an alumnus. Zarrilli also serves as an Advisory Board member of the Corporate Governance Council of Drexel University's LeBow School of Business and as a member of the Advisory Board for Executive Education at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
La Salle University Appoints Colleen M. Hanycz as President

La Salle University announced the appointment of Colleen M. Hanycz, as its 29th President. Hancyz is currently Principal of Brescia University College in
London, Ontario, Canada. An accomplished attorney and administrative leader as well as a devout Roman Catholic, Hanycz will be the first layperson and first woman to serve as President in a non-interim capacity. Hanycz was selected during a special meeting of the University's Board of Trustees on Feb. 12. Hanycz will formally succeed Brother Michael J. McGinniss, who stepped down at the end of his term on May 31, 2014, after serving 15 years as President. James P. Gallagher, has been serving as Interim President since June 2014 and has been assisting the University in its search for a new president. Hanycz has served as President of Brescia University College in London, Ontario, since July 2008. Hanycz is a past chair of the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities of Canada and serves as Vice Chair of the board of the London Health Sciences Centre and as a director of St. Joseph's Health Care in London, Ontario. She is also an elected member of the Public Accountants' Council of Ontario, among various other community roles.
