Sempra U.S. Gas & Power Announces Expansion of Arizona Solar Complex
Sep 14 15
Sempra U.S. Gas & Power announced a 100-megawatt (MW) expansion of its Mesquite Solar complex in Arlington, Ariz., about 60 miles west of Phoenix. When completed in late 2016, the expansion, called Mesquite Solar 2, will produce enough power for 45,000 homes. The entire output of the Mesquite Solar 2 expansion has been sold to Southern California Edison under a 20-year power purchase agreement. The contract is subject to approval by the California Public Utilities Commission. Construction on Mesquite Solar 2 is expected to begin this fall. The project will create hundreds of construction jobs, part of a multi-phase expansion that will employ about 600 workers at peak. The 4,000-acre Mesquite Solar complex is among the large photovoltaic solar facilities in the U.S. By late 2016, the complex's three phases are expected to produce a total of 400 MW. The company also expects to complete the 94-MW Copper Mountain Solar 4 project in Nevada during that time frame. By year-end 2016, the combined solar power portfolio of projects jointly owned by Sempra U.S. Gas & Power in Arizona and Nevada is expected to grow to more than 1,000 MW.
US Navy Signs Agreement to Purchase Renewable Energy with Western Area Power Administration and Sempra US Gas & Power
Aug 24 15
The US Department of the Navy (DON) has signed an agreement with Western Area Power Administration and Sempra US Gas & Power to construct a 210MW direct current solar facility to support 14 DON installations. The new development is expected to diversify the DON's shore energy portfolio and deliver long-term cost stability that supports the DON's energy security priorities. Sempra US Gas & Power's Mesquite Solar 3 project will deliver a third of the energy needed to power 14 navy and Marine Corps installations. The construction of the plant, which is located 60 miles west of Phoenix in Arizona, is expected to start this month. As part of the development, more than 650,000 photovoltaic (PV) panels on ground-mounted, horizontal single-axis trackers will be installed in the plant. The construction is scheduled to be completed by the end of next year. The new plant also enables the 14 installations to comply with California's Renewable Portfolio Standard.
Sempra to Supply 210 MW of Solar to US Navy, Marine Corps
Aug 21 15
A unit of Sempra Energy has signed a deal for the supply of 210 MW of solar power, in direct current (DC), to 14 Navy and Marine Corps installations in the US. The US Department of the Navy (DON) announced the agreement with Sempra US Gas & Power LLC. Sempra will supply the electricity from the Mesquite Solar 3 plant that will be built to the west of Phoenix, Arizona. The company expects to start construction of the solar park this month and to have it up and running by the end of next year. With over 650,000 photovoltaic (PV) panels to be installed on ground-mounted, horizontal single-axis trackers, the particular installation will be part of a larger complex with a total capacity of up to 700 MW. The purchase of solar power will help diversify the DON's shore energy portfolio, while saving at least USD 90 million (EUR 80 million) over the life of the project. The deal will also help the 14 installations comply with California's Renewable Portfolio Standard.
