Patrick Cudahy LLC Digs in to Expand Bacon Production by 10 Million Pounds

Patrick Cudahy LLC will expand its bacon-producing capacity by 10 million pounds per year, with a $12 million expansion started on April 2, 2015. The 17,000-square-foot addition will be built in that same area of the processing complex destroyed in 2009 when fireworks landed on the building and ignited a devastating fire. Four slicing lines are expected to open when the expansion is completed in October. The division of Smithfield Foods Inc. now produces about 40 million pounds of bacon each year, along with salami, pepperoni, pre-cooked bacon and refined lard. The new facility will not add jobs to the Patrick Cudahy operation initially .

Smithfield Foods Inc. announced that Daniel Kapella has been promoted to president of Patrick Cudahy LLC, effective March 1. In this role, Kapella will lead the day-to-day management of the company. The current president, William Otis, will transition to a new position as executive vice president of operations, packaged meats division for Smithfield Foods. Kapella has served as senior vice president of sales and marketing, foodservice for Patrick CudahyÂ® since July 2011.

Patrick Cudahy LLC is planning a $12.1 million addition to its Cudahy plant on land where part of its facility burned in a fire in 2009. The company is proposing a 16,500-square-foot addition to its meat processing plant. It would be built east of Patrick Cudahy's existing buildings at One Sweet Apple-Wood Lane. It is partially in the area where Cudahy's plant was damaged by a July 2009 fire.
